In 1979 Peter and Susan Risser formed San Juan Canvas Company and for more than 30 years crafted many a sail and canvas works out of the “little hole in the wall by the sea” which is located just under the San Juan Yacht Club. The Rissers built a solid reputation for high quality sailmaking and canvas, as well as being one of the friendliest shops around welcoming many a wayward sailor into the shop to shoot the breeze. Peter and Susan still live on the island, and they continue to contribute as the board members and founders of our local sailing foundation, teaching our kids to sail and coaching our high school teams to compete and flourish.
In 2009 Derek Steere and Lauren Cohen took over, and they continued the long tradition of pride in workmanship that San Juan Canvas is known for. Derek has established a style and elegance in Dodger and Enclosure fabrication that is sought after throughout the San Juans and beyond.
San Juan Canvas is currently owned and operated by Alan Arrowsmith (me). Since attending graduate school in Berkeley, CA, and, subsequently, the Arques School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Sausalito, CA, Alan has rarely been found far from the water. With a lifelong passion for sailing, boat building and woodworking, Alan is proud to continue providing quality craftsmanship and personalized customer service. He strives to carry on the strong tradition of San Juan Canvas quality craftsmanship, build and design.
Here or on the water, we’ll see you soon.
